San Sebastián

San Sebastián

San Sebastián is situated on the shores of the Bay of Biscay, in the northern Spain. Its true Spanish name is Donostia. The city boasts fashionable atmosphere, number of promenades and amazing beaches. The most famous one is the Playa de la Concha. The nearby popular Ondaretta Beach is better for those who search for relaxation right by the sea, or swimming in clean, somewhat chilly water. The seaside environment is enhanced by hilly surroundings that overlook the bay from the west. San Sebastián is renowed for its Basque cuisine. It is home to a high concentration of restaurants boasting Michelin Stars. Donostia is also a host of one of the most important cinema festivals in the world, San Sebastián International Film Festival, held in late September.

Gaztelugatxe

Gaztelugatxe

Gaztelugatxe is a little island situated on the coast of Biscay in Basque Country. It is connected to the mainland by a two-arch stone bridge. After crossing the bridge, there is a stairway consisting of 231 steps leading to the hermitage on top of the island. The hermitage, called San Juan de Gaztelugatxe in Spanish, dates from the 10th century and is dedicated to San Juan, to whom the fishermen in the area are deeply devoted. Walking upstairs pays off an amazing view. The island, crowned by a rustic chapel, exudes supernatural charm and is shrouded in legend. The best way to experience and fully appreciate this mystical island is from the sea. With another small neighboring island, Aketze, Gaztelugatxe form a protected biotope.
