Gaztelugatxe
Gaztelugatxe is a little island situated on the coast of Biscay in Basque Country. It is connected to the mainland by a two-arch stone bridge. After crossing the bridge, there is a stairway consisting of 231 steps leading to the hermitage on top of the island. The hermitage, called San Juan de Gaztelugatxe in Spanish, dates from the 10th century and is dedicated to San Juan, to whom the fishermen in the area are deeply devoted. Walking upstairs pays off an amazing view. The island, crowned by a rustic chapel, exudes supernatural charm and is shrouded in legend. The best way to experience and fully appreciate this mystical island is from the sea. With another small neighboring island, Aketze, Gaztelugatxe form a protected biotope.
